About Dr James Railton

Consultant Child & Adolescent Psychiatrist

Dr James Railton (MBBS BSc MRCPsych) is a Consultant Child and Adolescent Psychiatrist with particular interest in neurodevelopmental conditions, including ADHD and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).


Every child deserves to be understood as an individual. Dr Railton combines extensive clinical experience with a friendly, open communication style, ensuring young people feel safe and heard. With an emphasis on person-centred care, his goal is to empower young people to express themselves, build on their strengths and thrive. His evidence-based practice focuses on developing comprehensive, collaborative care plans informed by both the individual and their families, with dedicated long-term follow-up care.


Qualifications & Training

  

Dr Railton’s professional training includes:

  • MBBS (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) – Imperial College School of Medicine. Distinction in Clinical Practice.
  • BSc (Medical Sciences with Management) – Imperial College School of Medicine. First Class Honours.
  • MRCPsych (Member of the Royal College of Psychiatry)- Section 12(2) Approved, and Approved Clinician under the Mental Health Act (1983)


Additional specialist training includes:

  • ADOS-2 and ADI-R trained for the assessment of autism spectrum disorder.


Areas of Expertise


Dr Railton has a breadth of experience supporting children and adolescents across mental health and neurodevelopmental difficulties including autism spectrum disorder (ASD), ADHD, anxiety, OCD and depression.


Clinical Experience


Dr Railton has experience across services in London, Surrey and Sussex. His mental health experience has included posts in:

  • South West London and St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust
  • Surrey and Borders Partnership NHS Trust (where he received an award for clinical excellence)


He brings diverse experience from a variety of clinical settings, having worked in outpatient clinics, crisis intensive outreach teams, and inpatient adolescent units. He has worked in specialist teams including Child and Adolescent Mental Health Learning Disability Services, CAMHS Neurodevelopmental Assessment Services, and with the National Deaf CAMHS team.


Beyond this, he has undertaken special interest posts in child-and-young-person community eating disorders services, and in South London and Maudsley NHS Foundation Trust’s Autism and Intellectual Disability Intensive Intervention Team (AID-IIT).


Dr Railton is currently a Consultant within an NHS community Child and Adolescent Mental Health Service. Within this role he works in an initial assessment Access team, sleep clinic, and in Tier 3 where he supports the longer-term care of young people across the full spectrum of mental health and neurodevelopmental needs.


Beyond Clinical Practice

  

Dr Railton is passionate about contributing to medical education and professional development. He has contributed to teaching programmes in South West London St George’s Mental Health NHS Trust for resident doctors, as well as for medical students and paramedics at City St George’s University of London.


In his personal life, he enjoys cooking, photography, theatre and film. He spends much of his free time outdoors with his family and his English Setter dog.
